Healthy Living

I've been trying to slowly transition to organic products for a while. Yes, it can cost a little more but that's why I've chosen to transition slowly. Not to mention that finding a replacement product you like can actually take a few tries. I can recommend Body + Soul magazine as a good reference source. Their product reviews have given me a place to start when I'm looking to try something new. Also, I usually check out the websites of the advertisers as a reference.

The stores I frequent for items are Vitamin Cottage, Sunflower Markets and La Montanita Coop. Vitamin Cottage has a Certified Nutritionist on staff and the service is free. Having that service has really assisted me in making good purchases in the vitamin and supplement areas. Not to mention the general education on the products available to me. With the aid of a nutritionist, the huge selection wasn't as overwhelming. The bonus factor was that when I tried an item and it wasn't a good match for me, I could return it without a hassle. Hands down Vitamin Cottage earned my business. The only down side they seem to be out of things a lot and I've found that sometimes they have a hard time getting items periodically which forces me to shop elsewhere.

Sunflower Market has killer prices on produce, they offer both organic and conventional. Offer a nice diversity of products and I always get great customer service in the produce department. They also have a large spirits selection.

I just joined La Montanita Coop, so I'm still exploring it in contrast to the other stores. It is closer and community based so those are some very nice things. They are trying to be completive with Vitamin Cottage and Sunflower Market. They are looking to open a warehouse facility in first quarter 2007 which should decrease some of the prices. Their prices are in line with the market and staff is very helpful. Then there's the dividend bonus.

I don't frequent Wild Oats or Whole Foods. Why? It may sound odd but they seem so commercialized and somewhat pretentious that it's a real turn off. I can so get better prices and customer service somewhere else. And I've never had anyone there that could actually help me choose a product. Sometimes they're just downright rude. The one positive thing I can say about Whole Foods is their floral department is great. The selection and customer service is notable.

I like Trader Joe's. Nice selection, pricing and staff. But it's off my beaten path so I always forget it and it's usually super busy all the time.

As a health consideration, I have found that I can truly tell a difference in the pursuit of organic living. Even if you don't want to pursue it full throttle, changing a few items can really make a difference.
